Monponsett Watershed Association (MWA) was established in 2012 as an all-volunteer community group committed to the maintenance and preservation of the Monponsett Ponds. This includes clean drinking water for the city of Brockton and a clean, safe environment for the people, flora and fauna of Halifax, Hanson and beyond.
The mission of the MWA is to educate the public and to restore and preserve both East and West Monponsett Ponds for clean water and safe recreational use.
Covering 528 acres, the Monponsett Ponds are in the towns of Halifax and Hanson. Route 58 bisects the water into two basins, East and West. Both ponds are significant ecological and recreational resources. There are several town beaches and one state boat ramp. The ponds are host to many fishing derbies and recreational boaters. They also are an important supplemental water supply for the City of Brockton. The natural flow of water is from East to West Monponsett Pond then to Stump Brook, which drains eventually into the Satucket River, the Matfield River and then to the Taunton River.
West Monponsett Pond has been identified as an area of priority habitat by the Wildlife Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. Three state‐listed species of special concern have been confirmed: Tidewater Mucket (Leptodea ochracea), Eastern Pondmussel (Ligumia nasuta) and Umber Shadowdragon (Neurocordulia obsoleta).
Our all-volunteer efforts include:
--Working with state officials to re-establish the Central Plymouth County Water District Commission
--Obtaining and supporting funding for testing and treatment of the ponds
--Supporting state and federally funded studies, of which there have been many
--Education of the public through mailings, billboards, petitions and social media postings
--Annual pond clean-up of natural and man-made debris and litter
--Monitoring adherence to EPA Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), MA EPA Notice of Non-Compliance to the City of Brockton, and Brockton Resource Management Plan
